Wildcat Volleyball is Victorious Against the Vikings, Extends Home Winning Streak to 20

Weber State Volleyball returned home on Thursday night at Swenson Gym to open up Big Sky Conference play in a dominating way, and beat the visiting Vikings of Portland State by a score of 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 24-26, 25-14).

Portland State had an early lead in the first set at 3-2, but the Wildcats quickly regained the lead and wouldn't look back from there. With a balanced offensive attack, outside hitters Rylin Adams and Dani Nay had four kills each to lead the Wildcats, and the defense had as tough of a block as its had all season with four total team stuffs. The 'Cats cruised to a 25-17 set victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set saw more excellence from the Wildcats. Nothing was hitting the ground on Weber State's side of the court, as the team had 17 digs in the second set alone. In addition to stout defense, setter Ashlyn Power kept the Vikings guessing and spread the ball all over the court, as Weber State finished the set with five attackers who had at least three kills. WSU went on to win the second set.

There was a change of narrative in the following set, however. Weber State jumped out to a big 12-5 lead, but Portland State didn't plan on going quietly into the night. The Vikings rallied from their seven-point deficit and ended up taking the lead toward the final stages of the set. Weber State's Adams had a pair of aces in the set to make it a deuce set, but Portland State prevailed, taking the third set 26-24.

In the fourth and final set, Jeremiah Larsen's crew turned up the heat from the service line and was serving darts to the Vikings. With five service aces in the set, including three from Adams, Weber State ran away with a 25-14 win to close out the Big Sky season opener and improve to 6-5 (1-0) on the year.
Nay led the Wildcats with 13 kills, middle blocker Sam Schiess hit a scorching .364 and scored 10 kills, Adams had a double-double with 11 kills to match her 11 digs, and Power had another tremendous night with 38 assists.

"Conference play is what really matters," Larsen said after the match. "Non-conference is what's prepared us for this moment."
When prompted for his thoughts on the Wildcats' phenomenal serving night, including five aces from Power and Adams each, Larsen noted, "Our serve is tough. We don't only get aces, but we put them in a lot of tough situations so they can't really run their offense effectively."

Wildcat Volleyball is back in action on Saturday and faces off against Sacramento State. "(They are) really good," Larsen said of his team's next adversary. "It's going to be another grind. Hopefully we can handle adversity a little bit better than we did today." The match will be in Swenson Gym where the Wildcats have now won 20 matches in a row. Tickets to the match can be purchased online or by calling the Weber State ticket office at 801-626-8500.
