Wildcats Topple Vandals In Overtime Thriller

9/24/2021 11:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer

- Back before the seaon kicked off, the Weber State Wildcats were picked to finish 6th in the Big Sky conference which seats 11 teams. Last night, WSU took a step towards proving that the pre-season polls hold little weight as they powered past the Idaho Vandals with a 2-1 victory in their conference opener which needed overtime to determine the victor.

As cliche as it may sound, story for WSU's close losses this season has simply been them running out of time. In previous contests like the ones against Utah State, UC Riverside and Oklahoma State; the Wildcats looked bound to eventually net the equalizing goal but never were able to find the back of the net. Instead of hanging their shoulders and looking defeated, they've also fought to get that score which was widely on display against the Idaho Vandals on Friday night.

Against Idaho, Head Coach Craig Sanders felt like his squad had played well enough to win the game despite their 1-0 deficit on a goal that he'd described as a freak accident, at halftime he told them; "Although we're a goal down, we've down enough to earn the victory. If we could go out and turn it up a little bit in the second half we'll get a couple of goals," Sanders continued, "We took our chances, got the equalizer, and really dominated the second half."

In the second half, the 'Cats fired off 15 shots throughout the final 45 minutes while the Vandals only were able to must 3 during that span.

Out of those 15 shots, none were more pretty than the one Yira Yoggerst sent scorching past the outstretched hands of the Vandal keeper and into the back of net to tie the game at 1-1. Yoggerst was able to gather momentum off a pass from Morgan Furmaniak which hit her in stride and allowed her to rifle the shot that seemingly felt like it came flying from the Wildcat Village dorm building from across the street

Yoggerst's goal undoubtedly has already been dubbed as banger by her teammates but perhaps pivotal is the better title for it. It was the score that allowed WSU to finally get on the scoreboard and completely strengthen their hold on a game that already felt like they were beginning to control.

As Sanders alluded to after the game, there were moments when it seemed as if that second goal of the night for WSU would arrive before the clock struck 90' - but eventually the end of regulation arrived with the game knotted at 1-1.

The short break in the action didn't damper the purple wave of momentum that Weber State was riding and after getting off 1 shot in the first overtime session compared to none for Idaho, the golden goal came in the second session when Lily Webster advanced the ball to Lauren McConnell who then left a beautifully placed ball to Taylor Slack by hooking it towards the left post and allowed an approaching Slack to end Idaho's night with a header in the 104th minute.

Friday night was not only their first trip to overtime but also the first time WSU came from behind to win a game. On Saturday morning, WSU woke up with a 1-0 record in Big Sky play which is the second time this year that they've been able to wear a 1-0 record - the first coming in the season opener where they silenced Manhattan, KS and notched a decisive 2-0 victory over Kansas State.

In total, WSU had 21 shots to Idaho's 7 and Kaytlin Bradley played an instrumental part in the win by holding Idaho scoreless in the second half and overtime while saving 4 shots.

Next up for the Wildcats is a shot to go 2-0 in the conference with a battle against the Eastern Washington Eagles on Sunday at 1 P.M. on the Wildcat Soccer Field.

"Eastern is going to be a good game, they won (Friday) against Idaho State and so they'll come in elevated to play us. They're always a tough battle because they are so physical and a quick team."

Sunday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
