Wildcats Battle Tough In 2-3 Loss Against PSU

10/9/2022 3:18:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Wildcats are 2-11 overall and 1-4 in the Big Sky

Hillsboro, OR - Despite conceding an early goal in the 5th minute of the game, the Wildcat women's soccer team battled the first-place and only unbeaten team in Big Sky play to the wire this afternoon in Portland, Oregon losing by a heartbreaking score of 2-3.

Portland State jumped on the 'Cats early with Lucy Quinn scoring in the 5th minute of the game to put the Vikings up by one. It was a back-and-forth affair for the rest of the half with neither team able to gain much of an advantage.

With the 'Cats looking to right the ship in the second half, the Vikings again found the back of the net early when Raniyah Burton turned a ball and put it over the head of goalkeeper Mekell Moss for the 2-0 lead.

The deficit seemed to add a little more life to the Wildcat squad, as they turned up the pressure and started winning free kicks in dangerous areas against the Viking defense. In the 53rd minute, a perfectly placed free kick by Yira Yoggerst from about 35 yards out on the right side of the field found the head of Alexis Simpson to pull the 'Cats within one. Twelve minutes later, in the 65th minute, a similar ball was played on a free kick from the opposite side of the field off of the boot of Andelin Binford to the head of Alaina Wildenradt that pulled the 'Cats even.

The 'Cats continued to press for the win, but a ball somehow skirted past the Weber defense to the top of the penalty area and found the foot of Ocean Rideout. Mekell Moss did her best to preserve the tie, but the ball was just over her out-stretched arm and found the back of the net in the 79th minute.

Weber had multiple chances down the stretch to again pull even, with a number of good passes into the penalty area, and three corner kicks in the final minutes, but they just could not find the net again.

The 'Cats, who fell to 1-4 in Big Sky play (2-11 overall) showed today that they are up to the task to compete with the best in the Big Sky.
