Wildcats Fight in Semi-Final Shootout Loss to NAU
11/4/2022 5:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Greeley, CO - #5 Weber State, winner of four straight matches, took on the #1 seeded NAU Lumberjacks in Greeley Colorado in the second semi-final match of the Big Sky Women's Soccer Tournament. NAU, whose lone loss of the Big Sky regular season was to the Wildcats, was given all it could handle from the upstart 'Cats.
How It Happened:
NAU seemed to have the better run of play in the first half, but Weber had the best chances at goal. Twice in the first half, Weber found themselves with a forward playing 1v1 against the NAU keeper, but each time took one touch too many and were unable to get a shot off.
42nd minute:
The best chance for the 'Cats came right at the end of the half (42nd minute) when Sayler Scholosser made a great move up the right side of the field. After driving to the end line, she placed the ball right in front of the goal to Brynlee Meyerhoffer, whose shot was deflected off of a defender and hit into the legs of the diving NAU goalkeeper.
NAU held the lead in shots at the half (7-4), but none were difficult for Mekell Moss.
46th minute:
NAU broke through in the first minute of the second half when an attempted clearance by the WSU defense found the left foot of NAU forward Josie Novak at the top of the penalty area, who placed the ball just past the outstretched hand of Moss. NAU took the lead at 1-0.
56th minute:
The 56th minute saw the 'Cats with a couple of great chances for the equalizer. Co-Offensive MVP and Co-Golden Boot winner Morgan Furmaniak took a free kick from just outside the penalty area that the NAU goalkeeper parried away and out of bounds for a Wildcat corner. On the ensuing corner kick, the ball found Furmaniak's head, but the shot hit the crossbar instead of the back of the net.
64th minute:
Another great chance in the 64th minute came off of a cross from Shea Christiansen that found the head of Brynlee Meyerhoffer six yards from goal, but the NAU keeper was up to the task once again and just tipped the ball over the crossbar.
82nd minute:
The 'Cats broke through in the 82nd minute on a corner kick that turned into a bit of a scrum in the goal box. Meyerhoffer headed the ball into the box, which caused the NAU keeper to leave her goal line. A shot by Grace Kirby was saved, but not secured, and found the right foot of Yira Yoggerst who calmly played the ball between two NAU defenders and into the open net.
Overtime:
WSU was playing on the back foot for most of the two overtime periods, with the best chances for NAU skimming the crossbar in the 106th minute and Mekell Moss making a diving save in the 108th. The defense played just well enough to take the game to a shootout for the second straight game.
Kicks from the Spot:
NAU did not miss in the shootout, with each player choosing left. Moss was nearly able to parry one away, but the ball skimmed off her hand and into the net.
Furmaniak and Meyerhoffer each scored on their kicks, but NAU goalkeeper Trinity Corcoran was able to just get enough of Alexis Simpson's shot to direct it to the right post, and she made a great save on Rachel Twede's shot to the left to preserve the win for the 'Jacks.
Notables:
Weber State was the last team to defeat and the last team to score on NAU prior to this game. NAU had 7 straight shutout wins since the September 23rd matchup.
Finality:
This was the final game for WSU's Mekell Moss and Rachel Twede. The 'Cats, who had to win their final three regular-season games just to make it into the tournament, gave it everything they had in playing 220 minutes over the course of two days, nearly making it to the tournament finals. Weber outshot NAU 20-18 in the game and had enough opportunity to win. It's unfortunate that their run ended in the semi-finals, but they showed a lot of heart over the course of the past five games and that should give Wildcat fans plenty of excitement heading into the offseason.
