Wildcats Show Fight In Tough Loss To NAU

2/26/2022 6:40:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Final home game for seniors Kori Pentzer and Aloma Solovi

Ogden, UT – In what was the last home game for two Weber State seniors, the Wildcats showed a lot of fight in a tough loss to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 77-89 on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Wildcats to 6-13 in Big Sky play (10-18 overall).

How it Happened:
The Lumberjacks jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter behind hot shooting and an aggressive mark-up zone. Weber State had a hard time solving the Lumberjacks defense and fell behind early, 20-6. The rest of the game was a hard slog for the 'Cats, but they showed a lot of grit and determination, never allowing the Lumberjacks to completely break away. The lead for the 'Jacks stayed at around 10 points for most of the game with Weber able to pull close multiple times, only to see the 'Jacks sprint back out to the lead.

Weber matched the intensity that the Lumberjacks brought to the game, but that resulted in foul trouble for the 'Cats. Daryn Hickok and Emma Torbert ultimately fouled out of the game, and 3 other players had 4 fouls each, which caused substitution headaches for head coach Valeida Harris. Despite the poor start and foul trouble, the 4th quarter saw the 'Cats pull to within 2 points on 4 separate occasions, only needing one more stop and a basket to pull even, but each time the 'Jacks were able to hit a big shot and keep in front of the Wildcats.

Emma Torbert hit some big shots down the stretch, but an offensive foul and technical which fouled her out of the game with just under 3 minutes left seemed to take the life out of the 'Cats, and Weber ended up on the wrong side of the scoreline 77-89.

Numbers to Know:
The Wildcats were once again led in scoring by Daryn Hickok, who ended the game with 26 points. Kori Pentzer had one of her best games of the year in her last home game, scoring 19 points and hauling down 6 rebounds.

Up Next: The 'Cats hit the road as they head to Southern Utah. Tip off against the Thunderbirds is Friday, Mar 4 at 6:30 p.m. for their last game of the season before the Big Sky Tournament.
