Wildcats Finish Third at UC San Diego Invitational

CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Weber State men's golf team shot a three round total of 873 to finish in third place as the UC San Diego Invitational wrapped up on Tuesday at the La Costa Champions Course.

The Wildcats opened with rounds of 282 and 289 on Monday before closing the tournament with a final round 302 on Tuesday. The Wildcats finished 19 shots behind Sacramento State, who overtook the tournament hosts, UC San Diego, over the final 18 holes for the team title. Sac State finished at 854, one shot clear of the Tritons.

Brody Childs, who held the individual lead after 18 holes with an opening round 6-under-par 66, closed the tournament with rounds of 71 and 78 to finish at 1-under-par with a total of 215 to tie for 10th place overall. Childs carded 16 birdies and an eagle over his 54 holes.

Hunter Howe gave the Wildcats a pair inside the top-15 as he tied for 12th behind rounds of 69, 72 and 75 for an even-par 216.

Reese Fisher (74-77-72) shot 223 to tie for 43rd, while Hayden Banz (73-73-78) shot 224 to tie for 47th and Gunnar Knutson (81-73-77) tied for 69th at 231 to round out the Wildcats.

San Diego State's Justin Hastings shot rounds of 70, 69 and 68 for a 9-under-par 207 to earn individual medalist honors. Hastings finished one shot ahead of UC San Diego's Davis McDowell, while Sac State's Blaze Akana finished third at 211.

The Wildcats will next be in action on April 4-5 as they compete in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
