Personal Records Highlight a Strong Week for Wildcats

4/2/2022 11:05:00 PM | Women's Track & Field

The Wildcat's were in action this week at a pair of meets with most of the athletes competing in their first outdoor meet of the season. Several athletes competed at the Utah Valley Invitational in Orem, UT on Thursday, and Friday. A few team members competed at the Hayward Premier at the University of Oregon in Eugene on Friday, and Saturday.

Utah Valley Invitational

Starting on the Track where many Wildcats performed well over the two days of competition. In the 100m dash Brittany Cardall and Jasmine Devers finished just shy of qualifying for the final heat with tenth and twelfth place finishes. It was Devers' first time running the 100m dash and was able to post a 12.67 for an initial personal record (PR). Devers followed up her performance in the 100m with a PR and second-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 24.69.

In the hurdle events, Cidnee Davies-Bohn placed fourth in the 100m hurdles at 14.33. Emily Barnes-Sterzer came first in the 400m hurdles with a PR time of 59.74 which ranks third in the Weber State all-time list and is a mark that Coach Paul Pilkington felt would surely qualify her for the NCAA first-rounds at the end of the season.

In the 800m run Rebekah Geddes finished fifth and Kami Withers finished just behind her with a PR time of 2:17.95 and a sixth-place finish. Geddes and Withers both ran in the 1500m as well with Withers finishing fifth with a PR time of 4:45.87. Laurie Murphy also posted a PR in the 1500m run with a time of 4:51.26

In the 5000m run, Maura Williams placed fifth with a time of 18:07.28, Abby Lawrence finished sixth at 18:15.41, and Lexi Jonart finished eighth with a time of 18:45.87.

One athlete competed in the 3000m steeplechase; Bailey Wall placed first with a time of 11:07.18 competing unattached.

The 4x100m relay team (Davies-Bohn, Cardall, Riley Roberts, and Devers) rounds up top performances on the track with a second-place finish and a time of 47.99.

In Field events Alisha Ellsworth earned a PR in the long jump with a mark of 17' 7.75" and earned a sixth-place finish.

Stafanie Aeschlimann placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 37' 6.5".

In shot put Kapua Pulotu threw 44' 9.75" and finished in fourth. Pulotu also finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 147' 4.5".

Marissa Brunner-Schmidt and Lia Katoa performed well in the hammer throw with Brunner-Schmidt placing seventh, and Katoa finishing tenth in her first time competing in the event posting a mark of 149' 8.75".

Lauren Olsen had a mark of 131' 0.75" which put her eighth for the competition.

Hayward Premiere

Moving now to the Hayward Premiere where a few athletes competed in some of the short and long-distance runs.

Cheyenne Leatham competed in both the 800 and 1500m Invites placing seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:10.89, and tenth in the 1500 with a time of 4:26.43.

Coach Pilkington mentioned the strong performance from Bailey Winter in the 3000m steeplechase that was just outside of Weber States formidable all-time list. Winter ran 10:38.91 and finished in fifth place.

Rylie Lusk's performance in the 5000m put her number seven on Weber State's all-time list as she ran a time that was 50 seconds faster than her PR time set last year. Her time of 16:27.92 placed eighth in the meet and is another mark that coach Pilkington feels will qualify her for the NCAA first round in May.

The Wildcats will be back in action this week at a joint meet with the University of Utah. Day one of competition will be at Weber State's Chick Hislop Track & Field at Stewart Stadium and the second day will be at the University of Utah.
