Wildcats drop road game 67-52 at Montana State

BOZEMAN, Mont. - Weber State couldn't overcome a slow start and the Wildcats lost 67-52 to Montana State Saturday afternoon at Worthington Arena. 
Montana State shot 50 percent in the first half and held the Wildcats to 30 percent. The Bobcats went on a 13-0 run and jumped out to a 16-4 lead early on. The Wildcats later had a 7-0 run and cut the lead to 25-19, but Montana State finished the first half on a 14-0 run over the final 2:51 and held a 39-19 lead at halftime.Â
The Wildcats started the second half on a 10-0 run and cut the lead to 10 points four minutes into the half. The Bobcats came right back with a 7-0 run and Weber State was never closer than 13 points the rest of the way.Â
Montana State shot 44 percent from the field, compared to 42 percent for Weber State. The Wildcats shot 30 percent from the field in the first half and 54 percent in the second half. WSU was 4 of 16 from the 3-point line and was outrebounded 31-28.Â
Steven Verplancken led the Wildcats with 16 points. He was 7 of 12 from the field and knocked down two 3-pointers.Â
Dillon Jones finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Â
"We were really flat to start the game and this has to be a learning experience for us," said WSU head coach Eric Duft. "We dug ourselves too big of a hole and found some competitive spirit in the second half and played better. We just have to keep playing every possession and keep improving as a team."Â
The loss drops Weber State to 8-10 overall and 3-2 in Big Sky play.Â
