Wildcats roll to dominating win at Idaho State

Weber State defense recorded seven sacks with two forced fumbles and one interception. The WSU offense had a season-high 406 yards of offense.

POCATELLO, Idaho - Weber State got back on the winning track with a dominating performance on offense and defense in a 33-21 win over Idaho State Saturday afternoon at Holt Arena. 

It is the 10th straight win for the Wildcats over the Bengals and Weber State has now won 21 of the last 22 and 27 of the last 29 against Idaho State. 

The Wildcat defense accounted for seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and one interception. 

The WSU offense put up a season-high 406 yards with 222 yards passing and 184 yards rushing. The 'Cats held Idaho State top -30 yards rushing and allowed 354 yards passing. 

"It was a great team win today," said WSU head coach Mickey Mental. "I loved what our defense did against an explosive offense to get seven sacks and force three turnovers. On offense we had a lot of guys step up big and made plays."

After a scoreless first quarter, Weber State went off with 21 unanswered points in the second quarter. 

Richie Munoz found Jade Thrower for a 23-yard touchdown with 10:55 to play in the second quarter. 

After a defensive stop, the 'Cats scored again when Munoz found Jacob Sharp for a 19-yard touchdown with 6:23 to play in the quarter that made it 14-0. 

The Wildcats went for an recovered an onside kick, and five plays later, Munoz connected with Hayden Meacham for a 26-yard touchdown that made it 21-0 at halftime. 

Weber State recorded three sacks in the first few minutes of the third quarter. 

ISU scored its first points at 5:11 in the third quarter on a 20-yard touchdown run by Hunter Hays that made it 21-7 for the Wildcats. 

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Maxwell Anderson recorded a sack and forced a fumble, which Garrett Beck recovered and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-7. 

The Bengals scored just 1:10 later but missed the extra point and made it 28-13. 

A few plays later, Jack Kelly sacked the ISU quarterback in the end zone for safety to make it 30-13. 

Kyle Thompson added a 22-yard field goal that gave the 'Cats a 33-13 lead with 7:42 to play. 

The Bengals added a 37-yard touchdown in the final minute. 

In just his third career start, Munoz had a career day, finishing 26 of 41 for 222 yards and three touchdowns. 

Eight different receivers caught passes for the Wildcats Jacob Sharp leading the way with six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. Treyshun Hurry also had six catches for 45 yards and a touchdown and Meacham had three catches for 38 yards and a touchdown. 

On the ground, the 'Cats ran for 184 yards with Clarence Butler leading the way with 10 carries for 57 yards. Kris Jackson added seven carries for 44 yards. 

The Wildcat defense accounted for seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and one interception. 

Winston Reid, Garrett Beck, and Jack Kelly each were credited with six tackles. Kelly had two sacks and recorded the safety. 

Maxwell Anderson also had two sacks and a forced fumble. Steven Bryant had 1.5 sacks, Beck had a sack, and Keahnist Thompson had a half a sack. 

The Wildcats are back home for the final home game of the season next week, hosting third-ranked Idaho at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day as the Wildcats will honor 11 seniors prior to the game.
