Weber State rolls to 96-62 season-opening win

Four Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Dillon Jones with 26 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Benedictine Mesa.
OGDEN - Weber State had four players in double figures led by another double-doublue for Dillon Jones as the Wildcats rolled to a 96-62 season-opening win over Benedictine Mesa Tuesday night at the Dee Events Center.Â
Weber State never trailed in the win over the Redhawks. WSU shot 51 percent from the field and knocked down nine 3-pointers. The 'Cats were also 27 of 31 from the free throw line.Â
WSU led 46-25 at halftime and the lead was never less than 17 points in the second half. The Wildcats led by as many as 37 points late in the game and shot 56 percent from the field in the second half.Â
Weber State standout Dillon Jones picked up right where he left off last season with a strong performance. Jones played 27 minutes and tied his career-high with 26 points. He was 6 of 7 from the field and 13 of 13 from the free throw line, which is tied for the fifth-best free throw percentage in a game in WSU history.Â
Jones also grabbed 14 rebounds for his 39th career double-double. He recorded 20 double-doubles last season, the third most in the country.
Prior to the season he was a unanimous selection for the Big Sky Preseason MVP and was also named to the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award watch list.Â
Three other Wildcats scored in double figures as Steven Verplanken added 16 points. New Wildcat transfer Blaise Threatt added 15 points with three assists and Alex Tew had 12 points with five rebounds and two blocked shots.Â
Weber State now hits the road for their next four games, beginning Sunday with a top-25 matchup. The Wildcats will play at Saint Mary's on Sunday at 6 p.m. Mountain time in Moraga, California. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
After that, Weber State will play three games at the Atlantic Slam from November 17-19 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.Â
