Moscow, ID – The Weber State women's basketball squad closed out their road trip weekend at Idaho this Saturday evening with a 61-56 victory over the Vandals. The win improves the 'Cats 3-3 in the Big Sky.
The Wildcats started with a three-pointer made by Kendra Parra to put the 'Cats on the board first. Trailing the Vandals by two after Idaho put up a layup and three-pointer the Wildcats quickly responded with two layups and found themselves with the lead, 12-10. With 10 seconds left the Vandals Kennedy Johnson secured a layup and both teams were locked in with 12 points to end the first quarter.
Quickly into the second quarter, the Vandals went on a six-point run and pulled ahead 19-12. Battling back, the Wildcats earned a pair of free throws made by Daryn Hickok, and shortly after a layup by Amelia Raidaveta brought the 'Cats back in it tying the game 21-21. With just over two minutes of gameplay left until the half, a three-pointer by the Vandals earned them the lead by three. However, Jadyn Matthews followed with a three-pointer of her own tying the two teams once again, 24-24. With under a minute to go, Idaho found the net with a layup and ended the half 26-24.
Staying hot in the third quarter, the Wildcats put up four three-pointers and ended the quarter with a total of 22 points compared to the Vandals 14. Heading into the final frame of game play Weber State led 46-40.
Weber State was looking to continue their lead into the fourth quarter but the Vandals found momentum early and carried themselves on a seven-point run to tie them up at 49-49. From then on it was back and forth between the two teams. Two pairs of free throws made by the 'Cats Hickok and Matthews is what gave Weber State a three-point advantage with three minutes to go. With under a minute left, a layup by Taylor Smith and another pair of free throws gave the Wildcats what they needed to walk out of Moscow with a 61-56 victory.
"It was a big road win for our group," stated coach Jackson. "I'm really proud of how our girls responded to the execution of our game plan and I thought that we were really sharp defensively and we made big plays when we needed to. We had a really good stretch in the third quarter where we were sharp defensively and really had it going offensively. Idaho is a good team, they push back and they made a run of their own in the fourth and we knew that they were capable of that. I'm proud of our girls to sustain confidence and our effort in the fourth and in the stretch to get a big road win."
