The Wildcats are back in the Dee Events Center Feb. 1 against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.
Pocatello, ID - Saturday afternoon was a contest between the Wildcats and Bengals as Weber State traveled to Pocatello. The Wildcats played the Bengals competitive for the entire game, but came up short, 47-55. Weber State is now 3-5 in the Big Sky.
The Bengals jumped out in front with a six-point lead, 14-8 with under two minutes to go in the first quarter. Chipping away at the Bengals lead, a jumper by Jadyn Matthews allowed the Wildcats to trail by four. In the span of a minute following, Kendra Parra found the back of the glass and pulled the Weber State squad to end the quarter 12-14.
Up by two heading into the second quarter, the Bengals would open with a three-pointer by Nika Lokica and shortly after a layup by Laura Bello bringing the Idaho State team to 19-14 early into the quarter. It was a scoring dry spell for the Wildcats in the second quarter as the 'Cats went three minutes with no points until a sole free throw was made by Daryn Hickok. Securing the offensive rebound and also drawing the foul, Hickok found herself at the free throw line again to cut the Idaho State lead down to six but the Bengal squad continued to create separation and ended the half 27-19.
Weber State made adjustments at the half, opening the third quarter with six points in a minute and a half. A couple of steals made by the Wildcats allowed for easy baskets and the 'Cats cut the Bengals lead to two, 29-31. With five minutes left in the third, Weber State led in scoring at 10 points compared to the Bengals four. However, with under three minutes to go, the Bengals reclaimed their separation and ended the period 36-33 in their favor.
In the final frame of the afternoon, Weber State found their first lead since the first quarter with a three-pointer by Laura Taylor to put the Wildcats up by one. The lead changed hands after a couple of big buckets made by the Bengals Maria Dias. With under five minutes left in the period, a four-point run put the Wildcats again up by one. Not able to increase that, a three-pointer by Dias put the Bengals ahead. To tie it up 43-43, Kennedy Eskelson made a layup and forced the Bengals to a timeout. With an exciting three minutes left to go, both teams continued to battle. A block made by Kacey Spink was vital for the Bengals with just a minute and a half to go. Struggling to find the points in the remaining seconds of the game, the Bengals Dias was a spark in the fourth quarter and her 13 points led the Bengals to a 55-47 victory.
