Wildcats drop heartbreaker 17-16 at Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - Weber State dropped a heart-breaker 17-16 at Lamar Saturday night in Beaumont, Texas. 

The Wildcats missed a field goal as time expired sealing the win for the Cardinals in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. 

With 10:50 left in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats went on a 20-play drive that took 8:55. The 'Cats were faced with a fourth and goal from inside the one-yard line and went for the touchdown but were stopped by the Cardinals. 

The WSU defense forced Lamar to punt and had the ball with 44 seconds left. WSU moved the ball to the 23-yard line but Kyle Thompson's 40-yard field goal attempt missed as time expired.

Lamar jumped out to a 10-0 lead before the Wildcats scored 10 points over 47 seconds of the second quarter. Kyle Thompson connected on a 42-yard field goal to make it 10-3 with 3:07 to play, then on the next Lamar possession, Montae Pate intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at halftime. 

Weber State went on top in the third quarter as Richie Munoz found Colter May for a 2-yard touchdown but the extra point was missed and the 'Cats led 16-10. 

Lamar scored on its next possession on a 72-yard touchdown run and led 17-16 with 9:00 to play in the third quarter and neither team scored the rest of the way.  

Lamar totaled 385 yards of offense, compared to 331 for Weber State. The Cardinals rushed for 203 yards while Weber Stae had 184 yards passing and 147 yards rushing. 

WSU quarterback Richie Munoz was 22 of 30 for 184 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Sharp had seven receptions for 81 yards to lead the receivers. 

Texas native Damon Bankston had 23 carries for 83 yards and Adrian Cormier had six carries for 41 yards. 

Defensively, Angel King led the 'Cats with nine tackles and Brayden Wilson had seven. Jalon Rock had four tackles with one tackle for loss.

Weber State is right back on the road in the south next week as the 'Cats play at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, Louisiana. It will be the second of three straight games against teams from the Southland Conference.
