Wildcats fall 80-77 to Hornets

Viljami Vartiainen had a career-high 24 points with six 3-pointers for the Wildcats.

OGDEN - Weber State dropped a home game 80-77 to Sacramento State Thursday night at the Dee Events Center. 

The Hornets shot 55 percent from the field and knocked down 15 3-pointers. Sacramento State also had 21 assists and outrebounded the Wildcats 32-25. They had seven blocked shots and 38 points in the paint. Jacob Holt had 27 points with five 3-pointers and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Hornets. 

Weber State shot 52 percent from the field and made nine 3-pointers. 

Sacramento State jumped out to a 16-5 lead and led by as many as 12 points with 8:13 to play in the first half. The Wildcats scored the final six points of the first half to cut the Sacramento State lead to 40-37 at halftime. 

Weber State scored the first five points of the second half and took a 42-40 lead early in the half. But Sacramento State continued to answer the Wildcats with 3-pointers. The Hornets built a seven-point lead midway through the second half. They led by six points with 3:24 to play when the 'Cats went on a 5-0 run and cut the lead to one with 1:11 to play. 

A 3-pointer by Holt put Sacramento State up 79-75 with 36 seconds left and the Hornets hung on to seal the win. 

Sophomore Viljami Vartiainen led Weber State with a career-high 24 points and made a career-high six 3-pointers to lead the Wildcats. He was 9 of 18 from the field and 6 of 12 from 3-point range. 

Blaise Threatt had another strong all around performance as he finished with 20 points, tied his career-high with eight assists, and led the Wildcat with six rebounds. He also had three steals and played all 40 minutes. 

Trevor Hennig added 10 points for the Wildcats. 

Weber State will be back home again on Saturday afternoon to host Portland State. Tipoff set for 2 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.
