Weber State tops Utah State 7-6 in Ogden

OGDEN - Weber State softball blasted three home runs in one inning to take control of the game but it was pitcher Jayci Finch who sealed the deal in the seventh, shutting down the Aggies to secure the Wildcats 7-6 victory.

The Aggies struck first off a Kaylee Erickson RBI single.

Sienna Solis made the double play to get two Aggies out quickly in the top of the second. Tori Rey then retired the side, catching the fly out to left field.

Unable to create much offense, Weber State closed out the second with Gianna Memoli left on base.

The Wildcats took the lead courtesy of three home runs in the inning. Taegan Smith hit a home run to equalize the game 1-1. Olivia Birkinshaw then homered for two RBI and a Kiaira Smith home run advanced the score 4-1.

Utah State was back in it following a two RBI single in the fourth to cut the deficit down to one.

Creating some separation, Wildcat Sadie Kirk tripled for two RBI, her third this season and advanced the score 6-3.

Birkinshaw hit her second home run of the game and her eighth this season to tack on another for the Wildcats.

The Aggies pulled to trail by just one in the sixth off a two RBI double and RBI single.

Two strikeouts by pitcher Jayci Finch then closed out the game in the seventh to earn the Wildcats the 7-6 win.

Finch saved the game totaling her two strikeouts.

Taegan Smith and Birkinshaw both went 2-for-4 at bat. Birkinshaw totaled three RBI and two runs. Kiaira Smith went 2-for-3 at bat with one RBI.

Weber State will travel to Missoula for more Big Sky softball against the Griz. The weekend series will begin April 4 with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
