Wildcats Finish Strong, Wrap Thunderbird Invitational in Fifth Place

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Weber State shot the second-best score of the day on Sunday, closing out the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational in fifth place at Sunbrook Golf Club.

The Wildcats posted a 4-under par 284 on the day, finishing off the tournament with a 17-over par total of 881 after rounds of 299 and 298 over the first two days.

Weber State was bested on the day only by Northern Arizona, which recorded a 283 on Sunday to rally for the tournament title. The Lumberjacks slipped by 36-hole leader UC Riverside to finish with a two-shot victory and a tournament total of 7-over par 871. Stetson (877) finished in third place, while Montana State (878) finished in fourth, four shots ahead of the Wildcats.

Sofia Fuenmayor led the final day run by the Wildcats, carding five birdies in a scorching bogey-free 67. The career-best round on Sunday came after rounds of 81 and 77 and jumped her 24 spots on the leaderboard for a tie for 29th place at 9-over par 225. The 67 sets an all-time Weber State record for lowest 18 hole score, breaking the mark of 68 hit twice by Isabel Gutierrez.

Gutierrez and Jade Gruher led the way for Weber State over the weekend, finishing tied for 15th place at 5-over par 221. Gutierrez recorded rounds of 75, 73 and 73, while Gruher went 74, 74, 73.

Cala Korman shot rounds of 74, 74 and 75 to tie for 21st place at 7-over par 223.

Emily Song, who also went into red figures on Sunday with a 1-under par 71, jumped into a tie for 29th place at 225 after rounds of 76 and 78 over the first two days.

A trio of Wildcats also competed in the event as individuals, with Emma Lillywhite finishing in 40th place, Braylyn Bayer finishing in 45th place and Brynn Bischoff finishing in 66th place. Lillywhite (78-74-76) posted a 12-over par 228, while Bayer (77-76-78) recorded a 15-over 231 and Bischoff (84-79-81) was at 28-over 244.

NAU's Lizzy Neale shot rounds of 72, 71 and 70 for a 3-under par 213 to earn individual medalist honors with a one shot victory over second place Isaki Sakashita of Stetson.
