Wildcats dominate Bengals 10-4, earn fifth conference title

GREELEY, Colo. - Dropping a 3-2 game to start the day, a resilient Wildcat squad battled to a dominant 10-4 victory in game two over the Idaho State Bengals. The win earned the 'Cats their fifth conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.Â
GAME ONE
Weber State 2, Idaho State 3
Idaho State took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with a home run to left-center field.
The Wildcats threatened in the third inning with Eva Richardson on third base, but a strikeout by Taegan Smith ended the inning.
Weber State erased the deficit in the top of the fifth when Olivia Birkinshaw scored on a sacrifice fly, followed by a solo home run from Mariyah Delgado to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
That lead didn't last long, as the Bengals responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to regain a 3-2 advantage.
Weber State looked to rally in the top of the seventh, putting two runners on base, but a pop-up to first base ended the game and sealed the 3-2 win for Idaho State. The victory forces a winner-take-all game this afternoon for the conference title.
Jayci Finch took the loss (4-7), while Riley Whalen led the Wildcats at the plate, going 2-for-4.
GAME TWO
Weber State 10, Idaho State 4
The Bengals opened the second game with a bang, hitting a home run on the first pitch to take an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Birkinshaw responded with a triple down the left field line, driving in two runs to put the Wildcats ahead. Weber State entered the second inning with a 2-1 lead.
Birkinshaw added to the Wildcats advantage with a sacrifice fly, making it 3-1.
Idaho State answered with their second run of the game via another solo home run.
Weber State pulled away in the fifth inning, scoring three runs. Apple Maldonado delivered an RBI single, and Delgado followed with a two-RBI single to extend the lead.
The Bengals kept battling, closing the gap with a two-run home run to make it a two-run game.
Weber State responded in the sixth, adding four more runs. Birkinshaw crushed a three-run homer, immediately followed by a solo home run from Emma Bingham.
Idaho State couldn't overcome the deficit, and Weber State secured a 10-4 victory, clinching their fifth conference title. The Wildcats earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
