WSU wins second NCAA Regional game ever with 7-4 win over Bearcats, before season-ending loss to Ducks.
EUGENE, Ore. - Weber State softball earned its second-ever NCAA Regional win as the Wildcats beat Binghamton 7-4 on Saturday afternoon in the second game of the NCAA Tournament, marking their first regional win since 2019. With the win, Weber State advanced to face Oregon, where they fell 9-1 to end the season.Â
GAME ONE
Weber State 7, Binghamton 4
The Bearcats were first on the board after a popup to second base allowed a run to score.
Weber State responded in the second inning when Jordan McMahon doubled to bring home Eva Richardson.
The Wildcats took the lead as Olivia Birkinshaw launched a three-run home run, her 14th of the season, putting Weber State ahead 4-1.
Riley Whalen, with her first hit in Eugene, recorded an RBI single to score Mariyah Delgado. Shortly after, McMahon crossed the plate on a wild pitch, extending the Wildcats lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning.
The Bearcats chipped away at the deficit, scoring twice in the fifth inning, once on a groundout and another on an unearned run to cut the lead to 6-3.
Weber State added a seventh run when Abby Grundy delivered an RBI single.
Strong defense and solid pitching from Jayci Finch limited the Bearcats to just four runs, as Weber State secured a 7-4 victory.Â
The victory marks Weber State's first regional win since 2019; both NCAA tournament wins in Big Sky history belong to the Wildcats.
GAME TWO
Weber State 1, Oregon 9
Oregon struck early, taking a 1-0 lead over the Wildcats in the first inning.
Shortly after, Sadie Kirk tied the game with an RBI double.
The Ducks regained momentum, adding two runs on a home run to center field. They extended their lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning with another homer.
Despite putting six runners on base throughout the game, the Wildcats were unable to generate additional offense. Oregon went on to win 9-1, eliminating Weber State from the tournament.
Six Wildcat pitchers took the circle in the game. Brooke Merrill recorded two strikeouts, while Cali McCraw and Joslynn Veltien added one each.
Taegan Smith, Sadie Kirk, and Gianna Memoli each recorded a hit for the Wildcats.
"Couldn't be more proud of our team this year, especially all of our seniors here. They've done a good of setting the standard for how we want to go about everything that we do. They're great people. They're great Wildcats. They're great softball players. We're super proud of our season" said coach House.
