Wildcats top Griz in five, advance to face Hornets

Weber State will face No. 2 Sacramento State.
GREELEY, Colo. - Wildcat softball began the Big Sky Tournament this Wednesday afternoon taking their first game 9-1 in five innings against Montana. The win advances the Wildcats to play No. 2 Sacramento State.
The Wildcats struck first with a bases-loaded walk to bring in their opening run. A lightning delay then paused the action for four hours before play resumed between the Wildcats and the Griz.
In the bottom of the third, back-to-back home runs by Olivia Birkinshaw (Santa Margarita, CA/Mission Viejo) and Eva Richardson extended the Wildcats lead to 3-0. It marked Birkinshaw's eleventh home run of the season and Richardson's seventh.
Montana answered with an RBI single in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to two.
The Wildcats quickly responded in the bottom of the inning. Birkinshaw launched her second home run of the game,a two-run shot to push the lead to 5-1. Richardson followed with an RBI triple to right field, and Abby Grundy capped the game with an RBI single.
The Wildcats sealed a 9-1 victory in five innings, taking their first game of the tournament.
Brooke Merrill earned the win (4-4), finishing with one strikeout. The Wildcats recorded nine hits, including two each from Birkinshaw and Richardson.
