Weber State defeats top-seeded Idaho State, advances to championship game

GREELEY, Colo. - Weber State softball closed out the day against No. 1 Idaho State with a 5-2 victory. Taking down the number one seed, the Wildcats have advanced to play in the championship game on May 10.Â
Weber State came out strong, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sadie Kirk opened the scoring with an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Olivia Birkinshaw, who then later came around to score unearned.
Idaho State responded with a two-RBI double in the third to cut the deficit to one, but Weber State kept control.
In the fifth inning, Abby Grundy added some insurance with an RBI single that brought home Kirk, who scored unearned. The Wildcats extended their lead to 5-2 in the sixth when Kirk singled up the middle for her second RBI of the game.
Pitcher Cali McCraw and a strong defensive effort held the top-seeded Bengals to just two runs. McCraw went the distance in the circle, pitching a complete game while facing 28 batters and striking out two.
Kirk led the way offensively, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI.
