SALT LAKE CITY - Legendary softball coach Mary Kay Amicone was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025 on September 22 during the annual dinner and ceremony. She joined fellow honorees John Buck, Wally Joyner, Stew Morrill, and Holly Rowe as part of this year's class.Â
Amicone retired in May 2024 after 11 seasons as head coach of Weber State softball, leaving behind a legacy unmatched in the Big Sky Conference. A former Wildcat player herself, she guided the program to 10 Big Sky Championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances and the first NCAA regional win in conference history. She is both Weber State's and the Big Sky Conference's all-time leader in wins and winning percentage.
In her time with the Wildcats, Amicone recorded 297 victories, six Big Sky regular-season titles and four tournament championships. Her 2022 squad set multiple school and conference records, tying the program record for victories (38), earning the Big Sky's first-ever No. 3 seed in NCAA regional play and notching a historic win over Texas A&M. That year, Amicone was named Big Sky Coach of the Year for the third straight season and the fourth time in her career.
Across her career, Amicone accumulated more than 800 career victories as a head coach at Weber State, Salt Lake Community College and BYU. She launched BYU's softball program in 2000, leading the Cougars to a Mountain West Championship and earning Mountain West Coach of the Year honors in 2001. At SLCC, she won 430 games, claimed seven conference titles and made three NJCAA national championship appearances.
Amicone also became the first female head coach of a high school boys' baseball team at Jordan High, and earlier won a Class 5A state softball title at Bingham High. As a player, she was a first-team All-American at the University of Utah after beginning her career at Weber State.
Amicone's influence has always extended beyond the field. Known for her mottos "finish empty" and "leave the jersey better than you found it," she inspired generations of athletes to compete with purpose and integrity.
She and her husband, Marc Amicone, longtime president and general manager of the Salt Lake Bees, raised two sons, Trevor and Derek, who also played baseball. The Amicones remain deeply woven into Utah's baseball and softball community.
