Weber State earns a second-place finish at the Bill Dellinger Invitational while three Wildcats finish inside the top five at CSI

The Weber State men's cross country team split its squad Friday, with Wildcats competing at both the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Eugene, Oregon, and the CSI Invitational in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Both groups turned in impressive performances, highlighted by a second-place team finish at the Bill Dellinger Invitational and an individual as well as team victory at CSI.

I am really stoked about today, both with the group that raced in Twin Falls at CSI and the group who raced in Eugene at the Dellinger Invite, Weber State head coach Corbin Talley said. We had some outstanding individual performances, and both groups represented the team extremely well.

At the Bill Dellinger Invitational, Weber State posted a second-place team finish in the 8,000-meter race.

Jacob Peterson led the Wildcats with a fourth-place finish and a season-best time of 23:54. Tyler Spencer followed in seventh at 24:04, setting a new personal best.

Paul Scown continued the strong showing with an 11th-place finish in 24:15, also recording a personal best. Raivio Manzer finished 14th in 24:19, while Evan Harris rounded out the Wildcats' top five in 15th with a personal-best time of 24:21.

The Wildcats' top five runners finished within 27 seconds of one another, helping Weber State secure its second-place team finish.

Talley was especially pleased with the way Scown, Manzer and Harris competed together throughout the race.

I was really happy with the trio of Paul Scown, Raivio Manzer, and Evan Harris, Talley said. They worked so well together throughout the race. They moved up from around 60th at 1K to finish in the top 15 and really secured us a second-place finish.

The performance at the Bill Dellinger Invitational also featured strong individual efforts from Peterson and Spencer. Talley highlighted Peterson's fourth-place finish as particularly impressive and praised Spencer for continuing his progression over the past year.

A fourth-place finish at that meet is very impressive, Talley said of Peterson. I thought Tyler Spencer also put together a tough performance to place sixth and run an 8K PR. He's improved quite a bit over the past year.

At the CSI Invitational, Weber State also turned in a strong performance in the 7,000-meter race, placing three runners inside the top five.

Alex Maxfield led the way with an individual victory, finishing first in 22:08. Jake Seegmiller placed third in 22:24, followed by Caden Timm in fifth at 22:28.

Alex Harbertson added an eighth-place finish in 22:36, while Logan Marek rounded out Weber State's top five with a 12th-place finish in 22:52.

Maxfield's victory marked a strong return to competition after Talley said the team had been cautious with him following his race at the John McNichols Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana.

I was really proud of Alex for getting the win, Talley said. We've had to be careful with him for a couple of weeks, and he bounced back really well to race strong today.

Talley said the Wildcats also showed plenty of grit on the challenging course at CSI, where Weber State tied Boise State in team scoring and won the tiebreaker.

The guys were really gritty on a tough course, Talley said.

With both groups producing strong results on Friday, Talley said the day ranks among the best team performances Weber State has put together over an 8K race.

Overall it was a fantastic day for us, Talley said. I know every course is different, but this is one of our top team performances over 8K in program history.

The Wildcats will now turn their attention toward the Big Sky Championships and NCAA Mountain Region Championships in the coming weeks.

We've still got a lot of work to do, but we're looking forward to a very competitive Big Sky Championships and NCAA Mountain Region Championships, Talley said.
