PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – For the second day in-a-row, Weber State finished up its matchup in a tie as the Mountain Classic Match Play tournament continued at The Classic Club on Tuesday. The Wildcats squared off against Wyoming in their second match of the event, and again deadlocked at 2-1-2.
And for the second-straight day, the Wildcats came up on the short end of a tiebreaker. On Monday the Wildcats lost on the first tiebreaker, margin of victory across all matches. On Tuesday against Wyoming, the margin of victory was also deadlocked, and Wyoming won on the second tiebreaker, which went to play on the toughest hole of the course.
"Today was just a great match with a lot of wonderful play," said WSU head coach Rich Friend. "Really proud once again on how we competed out there today."
Sofia Fuenmayor earned the Wildcats' first point of the day, taking down Kira Reisner 1-up. Fuenmayor recorded her second birdie of the day on the 16th hole to go dormie with a 2-up lead with two holes to play, and then earned a halve of the 18th hole to preserve the win after Reisner won the 17th.
Cala Korman earned the second point of the day for Weber State, scoring a 2-up win over Kiley Reisner. Korman won the final hole to hold end a comeback after Reisner won holes 15 and 16 to cut a 3-up lead to a single hole.
Braylyn Bayer earned a crucial halve in her match against Meghan Vogt, which was the last of the five on the course. With the score tied 2-2, and facing a 1-down deficit heading to the final hole, Bayer recorded her second birdie of the day to win the hole and pull all-square to end the day with the two teams tied.
Jade Gruher dropped her match 2 & 1 to Elle Higgins, while Emily Song lost 1-Up to Emmerson Purcell, who birdied the final hole to take the point for the Cowgirls.
Adley Nelson dominated in her individual match on Tuesday, defeating Wyoming's Erika Cook. Nelson carded three birdies on the day to cruise to a dominating 8 & 7 win.
Weber State will face off against tournament-host Boise State on Wednesday to wrap up the tournament. The Broncos are the highest-ranked team in the field, marking a tough challenge for the Wildcats.
