WSU falls 88-74 to Northern Colorado

OGDEN – Weber State battled throughout but could not overcome a strong shooting night from Northern Colorado, and fell 88-74 Thursday night at the Dee Events Center.
Northern Colorado jumped out quickly, using a 13-0 run midway through the first half to build a 34-15 lead with 6:35 remaining. Weber State closed the half on a 12-4 run and cut the lead to 42-33 at halftime. The Bears shot 55 percent from the field in the first half with six 3-pointers. Weber State was 0-10 from 3-point range in the first half.
The Wildcats trimmed the margin to 10 points several times in the second half but could never get closer than that the rest of the way as Northern Colorado answered each rally and maintained control down the stretch.
The Bears finished the game at 59 percent shooting and knocked down 11 3-pointers. The Wildcats shot 41 percent and were just 2 of 17 from 3-point range. WSU was 20 of 24 from the free throw line, but UNC won the rebounding battle and had seven blocked shots.
Once again, Tijan Saine Jr. led Weber State in scoring, finishing with 24 points and was a perfect 10 of 10 from the free throw line.
Viljami Vartiainen and Nigel Burris each added 16 points, and Edwin Suarez Jr. pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds off the bench.
WSU was without Jace Whiting, who is still out with a foot injury, and Trevor Hennig, who missed his third straight game due to illness.
The Wildcats will play their fourth game in eight days as they take on Northern Arizona Saturday night at 7 p.m.
