Weber State opens series against Portland State with doubleheader sweep

HILLSBORO, Oregon - Weber State softball opened the weekend, sweeping the Portland State Vikings in a doubleheader at Hillsboro Ballpark.Â
Game One: Weber State 3, Portland State 2 (8 Inn.)
The Vikings struck first in the opening inning, plating two runs on an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to take a quick 2-0 lead.Â
Weber State starter Cali McCraw worked through the early traffic before Kendall Freidinger entered in relief and settled the game down. Freidinger tossed 5.2 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three to earn the win. She kept Portland State off the board the rest of the way and gave the Wildcats the chance to make a comeback.
Weber State broke through in the fourth inning when Emma Bingham launched a two-run homer to deep left field, tying the game at 2-2.Â
The score stayed tied until the eighth, when Abby Grundy delivered the game-winning swing. Leading off the inning, she crushed a solo home run to left field to put Weber State in front 3-2.
At the plate, the Wildcats totaled seven hits, with Mariyah Delgado leading the way with two. Grundy finished with two runs scored and the decisive homer, while Bingham drove in two of Weber State's three runs.
Game Two: Weber State 6, Portland State 5
Portland State jumped in front early with a two-run homer in the first inning, but Weber State settled in behind pitcher McCraw, who kept the Vikings quiet through the middle innings and picked up her fifth win of the season.
The Wildcats got on the board in the fourth when Delgado lined an RBI single down the left field line to score Bingham and cut the deficit to 2-1.
Weber State took control in the fifth with its biggest inning of the day. Grundy opened the rally with an RBI double before runs also came home on a Sadie Kirk bunt, a Bingham sacrifice fly and a Portland State error. The four-run frame flipped a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 Wildcat lead.
Grundy added important insurance in the sixth, blasting a solo home run down the left field line to push the lead to 6-2. The homer marked her second of the day after her extra-inning winner in game one.
The Vikings made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run homer, but Weber State closed out the seventh to secure the 6-5 victory.
Delgado finished with two RBIs, while Grundy drove in two and scored twice in another standout performance.
