OGDEN - Wildcat softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Montana Lady Griz.Â
Game One: Montana 4, Weber State 2
Montana established an early lead, scoring first in the top of the fourth inning with a home run to left-center field by Mejia.
The Lady Griz then extended their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth inning using an RBI single and a two-RBI double. They added another run in the sixth to make the score 4-0.
Weber State answered in the bottom of the sixth. Sadie Kirk's double drove in Abby Grundy for the Wildcats' first run, and Emma Bingham followed with a single to bring home Kirk, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Unable to produce any other offense in the seventh, the Wildcats dropped a 4-2 decision to the Lady Griz.
Weber State recorded four hits, led by Grundy with two. Cali McCraw pitched a complete game, with two strikeouts.Â
Game Two: Montana 11, Weber State 6
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first when Kirk delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Jordan McMahon, who had earlier reached on a double.
After two scoreless innings, Weber State's offense reignited in the third. Bingham launched a three-run home run to center field to push the lead to 4-0. The momentum continued as Kiaira Smith produced a single to center field, driving in Taegan Smith and Apollonia Maldonado to extend the cushion to 6-0.
However, the Lady Griz began their steady climb back into the game. Montana got on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and added a solo shot in the fifth. In the sixth, a two-run homer by Gutierrez cut the Wildcats' lead to just 6-5.
The final frame proved to be it for the home side. Montana's Christiaens connected on a three-run home run to left field to give the Lady Girz their first lead of the game. Before the Wildcats could escape the inning, Tarrant and Cherms added back-to-back home runs, capping off a six-run seventh inning that left Weber State facing an 11-6 deficit they could not overcome in the bottom half.
Kendall Freidinger took the loss for the Wildcats, pitching 6.1 innings. Despite a strong start where she held the Lady Griz scoreless through the first three innings, she was eventually tagged for 10 earned runs on 10 hits. Raina Navarro appeared in relief to record the final two outs of the seventh.
