OGDEN - Two Weber State senior track and field standout athletes have been honored for their success in competition and in the classroom.

Weber State women's track and field senior Alyssa Hansen Freestone and WSU men's track and field/cross country senior Peter Visser have been named the Weber State Big Sky Scholar Athletes for the 2025-26 academic year.

Freestone has been a part of the Weber State program since 2021. She is a former Big Sky Champion and earned All-Big Sky honors three times.

She captured the Big Sky title in the javelin in 2023, just the third Wildcat to ever win the conference title in the javelin.

She also finished her career in the top 10 in three events. She is second all-time in the javelin and the hammer throw in outdoor track and field and ranks eighth in the weight throw in indoor track and field.

A native of Pleasant View, Utah, Freestone earned a Nursing degree at Weber State and earned multiple academic honors.

Peter Visser finished his career with the Wildcat men's track and field and cross country teams in 2026 as one of the best careers in school history.

He has been part of the Wildcat program since 2021 and finished his career holding three Weber State school records, and competed in the NCAA Tournament five times.

He ranks first in school history in the outdoor 5,000 meters and in the indoor 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. He also has three other ties on the WSU top 10 lists.

He captured a Big Sky title in the indoor 3,000 meters in 2026 and was named the Weber State Male Athlete of the Year.

He earned All-America honors at the 2025 NCAA Cross Country Championships by finishing 35th overall. He qualified for the NCAA Championships in cross country three times and twice qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the steeplechase.

He earned Big Sky All-Conference honors 11 times in cross country and track and field and had six second-place finishes in conference meets.

He also earned multiple academic honors, including being named the Elite Scholar Athlete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last fall.

A native of Afton, Wyoming, he became the first Wyoming native to record a sub-four-minute mile. Visser has a Master's degree in English and had a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. in both his undergraduate and graduate studies.

To be eligible for this award, the student-athlete must have exhausted his or her intercollegiate athletic eligibility and/or be a member of the graduating class, earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0) scale, been a participant in a Big Sky-sponsored sport, completed at least two (2) years of intercollegiate competition at the institution, and been a letter winner.
