Rich Friend was hired as the Director of Player Development for the Weber State men's and women's golf programs in July of 2016.

During his tenure with the Weber State golf programs, the two teams have combined for six top-four finishes at the Big Sky Conference Championships, including a win by the WSU men's team in 2022. Also in 2022, the Wildcat women posted a third place finish, their best placement since a third place back in 2009.

Friend, who played with the Wildcats under former head coach Mac Madsen, came back to Weber State after having spent the previous 30 years as a golf professional at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash. He was the head professional at Tacoma Country and Golf Club from 1989 to 2016.

As a Wildcat, he was a tournament individual medalist twice and recorded six top-10 finishes. He led Weber State to consecutive Big Sky Conference team titles in 1979 and 1980, and he was the conference tournament individual medalist in 1980. He helped the Wildcats to a 13th place finish in the NCAA tournament in 1979 and a 23rd place finish in 1980.
