SALT LAKE CITY -- The Weber State men's tennis team posted some good results recently as several players/teams reached semifinals in various draws of the University of Utah Intercollegiate.

"We played some really good tennis at this tournament," said WSU head coach Jared Burnham. "The guys really took the initiative and worked hard on their games this offseason. The results show how much effort they've been putting in on their own over the last few months."

In the main singles draw, both Henning Hipp and Sascha Kiehne reached the semis before losing. Hipp defeated Utah State's Jacob Asplund 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the Round of 32 to get things rolling. He then got past BYU's A.J. Young 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Stephen Jacobs of Utah 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-5. He was eventually tripped up in the semis by the Utes' Wes Hancock.

While Hipp was fighting to three sets wins, Kiehne cruised with straight sets wins throughout his run. He opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Utah's Jason Smits in the Round of 32. He then downed Boise State's Freddy Walsh 6-2, 7-5(5) in the Round of 16, before advancing past Utah's Phillip Eilers in the quarterfinals. Kiehne's run was eventually spoiled by BYU's Evan Urbina.

Chris Williams, who lost in the main draw Round of 32 to Eilers, advanced to the back draw semifinals with wins over Alex Thatcher (Utah State), Smits and Amit Maharaj (Utah State).

Kiehne, playing with new doubles partner Hipp, advanced to the Semifinals of the Main Doubles draw for the third-straight year. The previous two seasons, Kiehne made the semis alongside Fabio Mancarella, who is not back with the Wildcats this season.
