Wildcats Grab 4-3 Win Over Nevada

RENO, Nev. -- The Weber State men's tennis team improved to 8-7 on the season Friday with a 4-3 win over the University of Nevada. The match opened a quick two-match swing to Nevada and Sacramento State this weekend.
"This was a really good win in some tough conditions," said WSU head coach Jared Burnham. "We had some very strong winds, which doesn't make for ideal tennis, but our guys battled hard and we were able to come out ahead."
The Wildcats jumped out early, grabbing the doubles point behind wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Sascha Kiehne and Fabio Mancarella downed AugSustin Myard and Laurent Garcin in a tough match at No. 1, pulling out a 9-8 win. At No. 3, Spencer Marchant and Ryan Garner defeated Kristian Kuharszky and Gabe Kanzelmeyer 8-4. That match was the first-ever collegiate action for Garner, a freshman from Kaysville, Utah.
In singles, the 'Cats earned straight-sets wins at No. 4 and 6, while suffering straight-sets losses at No. 1 and 3. Nick Plum defeated Kuharszky 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 and Marchant downed Guerin Smith 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 to make the match score 3-2 for the Wildcats.
At No. 5, Chris Williams jumped out ahead with a 6-2 first set win. His opponent, Augustin Myard, battled back to win, taking the final two sets 6-0 and 6-2. That match evened the score at 3-3 overall, placing the outcome on the No. 2 singles match, which raged between Kiehne and Alex Daruty.
Daruty grabbed the early lead, taking the first set 7-5, but Kiehne bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second set. In the final set, Kiehne fell behind 5-2, but the sophomore from Renningen, Germany pulled off the comeback to take a 7-6 win.
The Wildcats will jump back into Big Sky play on Saturday as they take on the conference favorite, Sacramento State at 10:00 a.m. WSU will be looking to improve on its 2-0 league record.
