WSU Drops Tight Match with Cal-Poly

PROVO, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team (6-7) lost a hard-fought match to Cal-Poly (6-4) on Thursday, falling 4-3 at the Brigham Young University Tennis Complex.

The Mustangs jumped out to the early lead, taking two of three doubles matches for the opening point. WSU's lone doubles win came as Henning Hipp and Nick Plum defeated Andy Gerst and Nick Berger 8-4 at No. 2.

In singles, the Wildcats fought back, winning three-sets matches at the No. 2 through 4 positions. Cal-Poly would hold on, however, with three-set wins at No. 1 and 6 and a straight-sets win at No. 5.

Sascha Kiehne defeated Darryn Young at No. 2 singles 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, while Fabio Mancarella pulled out a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Drew Jacobs at No. 3. At the No. 4 position, Plum ran his singles winning streak to four-straight, with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory over Rob Foy.

"I was really pleased with the way our team played, despite the loss," said WSU head coach Jared Burnham. "They (Cal-Poly) are a tough team that has some really good wins lately, and to fight them to the point were the match can swing either way is very encouraging. Unfortunately, it just didn't go our way today."

The Wildcats face their second Big Sky opponent of the season on Saturday, as they host the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
