Tiebreak Rally Leads 'Cats to Win

OGDEN, Utah -- Henning Hipp rallied from a 6-3 deficit in a second-set tiebreaker to clinch a 4-2 win over Northern Arizona for the Weber State men's tennis team on Saturday at the Ogden Athletic Club.
Hipp and teammate Sascha Kiehne entered the No. 1 and 2 singles matches needing one win out of the pair to finish the match as the 'Cats led 3-2. Hipp cruised in his opening set 6-1, while Kiehne fell behind, dropping his first set 6-4. In the second set, NAU's Jeffrey Morys fought to a tiebreak and was one point shy of sending the match to a third set, when Hipp rallied with five-straight points to end the match.
"That was a big rally by Henning," said WSU head coach Jared Burnham. "It was nice to get that match there, because it looked like Sascha was going to lose at (No. 2). If that match goes to a third set, who knows what could have happened."
Northern Arizona (2-11 overall; 1-1 Big Sky) won the doubles match behind wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Kiehne and Fabio Mancarella claimed the lone doubles win for the 'Cats with an 8-6 win over Chris Arena and Bradley Bristow.
In singles play, the Wildcats took three of the first four matches to take a 3-2 lead as the top-two positions took to the court. Mancarella dominated in the No. 3 position, beating Bristow 6-0, 6-0, while Nick Plum won at No. 4, defeating Jake Tracy 6-0, 6-3. At No. 6, Chris Williams defeated Ryan Fraser 7-6, 6-0.
Weber State moves to 7-7 overall on the season and remains undefeated in the Big Sky Conference after two matches. The team will have nearly three weeks off until they face Nevada in Reno, Nev. on Mar. 28.
