OGDEN, Utah -- 19th-ranked Brigham Young scored goals in the second and sixth minutes, paving the way for a 3-1 victory over the Weber State women's soccer team on Wednesday at Wildcat Soccer Field.
Carlee Payne ran on to a through ball played by Kelsea Kakadelas and placed a shot to the right side of the net, giving BYU a 1-0 lead just one minute and 20 seconds into the contest.
Less than four minutes later, Payne took a penetrating pass from Lindsi Lisonbee and dished a short cross to Kassidy Shumway, who beat WSU goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie to put the Cougars up 2-0.
Kelly Robinson, one of four Wildcat seniors playing their final career home match, scored her first goal of the season just shy of the 12th minute. Robinson took a pass from Jessie Baddley and fired a shot from the left corner of the box to the far post to cut the lead in half.
The Cougars added an insurance goal in the 59th minute as Shumway gathered a pass from Payne in the middle of the box and placed a shot just under the crossbar.
Shumway nearly recorded a hat-trick as she buried another shot in the 64th minute, but the Cougars were called offsides on the play.
Rebecca Ritchie recorded nine saves for the Wildcats in her final career home match. Also playing their last match at Wildcat Soccer Field were Lindsay Griffin, Shannon Thompson, Abby Robinson and Maggie Bartel.
The Wildcats fell to 6-11-0 with the loss, while BYU improved to 15-2-2. The Wildcats will wrap up the 2009 season on Saturday as they travel to Pocatello, Idaho to face conference rival Idaho State. The match will kick off at 1:00 p.m.
