Ogden, UT – The Weber State volleyball team held a 2-0 lead and had five chances to win the match but in the end, the Wildcats fell 3-2 to Northern Colorado Saturday night at the Swenson Gym. The Bears won the match 20-25, 19-25, 28-26, 25-22, 15-8 to improve to 9-2 in Big Sky play.
The loss is the fourth straight for Weber State who falls to 5-19 overall and 3-9 in conference action.
The 'Cats came out and dominated the first two sets. WSU hit 3440 in the first set and .308 in the second set to take a 2-0 lead for just the second time all year.
Weber State led 24-20 in the third set and had four straight chances to win the match but the Bears scored four straight to make it 24-24. The 'Cats went up 25-24 and had another chance to close out the match but Northern Colorado scored again and went on to win the set.
The 'Cats tied up the fourth set at 18-18 but the Bears went on a 7-4 run to close out that set and even the match.
It was all Northern Colorado in the fifth set as they never trailed and hit .733 with 11 kills and no hitting errors.
“This match pretty much sums up the season for us,” said WSU head coach Al Givens. “We haven't been able to close out sets and that's what cost us tonight. Our effort was much better than last night and we did some great things and had some really good performances but not being able to make the points when we needed has been our problem all season.”
The match was the 500th career match for Al Givens at Weber State.
Weber State had some great individual performances led by senior Chelsea Bair who tied her season-high with 23 kills on the night, along with nine digs. It was the fifth time she has posted 20 or more kills in her career.
Amy Fackrell had a career-high 16 kills on the night and hit .355. Jocilyn Taylor had career-highs of seven kills and 50 assists and hit .429 for the match.
Emily Jones had a career-high seven kills and Jenna Leggat added nine kills and nine digs.
The Bears had two more kills, 12 more digs, and nine more blocks than the Wildcats. Northern Colorado hit .311 while Weber State hit .256.
The Wildcats now have just four conference matches remaining on the season. WSU will next play at Sacramento State next Friday in the only match of the week.
