Ogden, UT – Jenna Leggat had a career-high 20 kills and Chelsea Bair added another double-double to lead the Weber State volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Southern Utah in a non-conference match Tuesday night at the Swenson Gym. The win was the second straight for Weber State as the 'Cats improve to 7-19 overall and head back down the stretch of Big Sky Conference action.
Weber State won the match 25-20, 28-30, 25-18, 25-21 to defeat the Thunderbirds in their first season of volleyball since 1988.
The 'Cats never trailed in the first, third, or fourth sets. The second set had 14 ties and five lead changes. The Wildcats had four set points but Southern Utah responded each time. Trailing 28-27, SUU scored the last three points to win the set. But the Wildcats held off other Thunderbird charges to seal the match in four sets.
Weber State had 52 kills, two less than the Thunderbirds. The 'Cats out hit SUU .254 to .172 and had six more digs and seven more blocks. They also had seven aces, while Southern Utah recorded 16 service errors.
“This was a great team effort and a good offensive match,” said WSU head coach Al Givens. “We did a good job of responding to what Southern Utah did and for the most part we made the plays when we needed them. Jenna and Chelsea both had great matches and we played hard as a team.”
The 20 kills by Leggat broke her previous career-high of 18 kills, which she tied in the last match Friday at Sacramento State. The Hayden Lake, Idaho native hit .439 on the night and recorded six digs and three blocks. Leggat recorded eight kills in the fourth set, helping the 'Cats close out the match.
Bair posted her tenth double-double of the season, finishing with 17 kills and 15 digs. She has now posted double digits in kills in WSU's last 15 matches and 20 of the 26 matches this season. With Leggat leading the team in kills, it marked the first time in the last 15 matches in which Bair has not led or tied for the team lead in kills.
Weber State also had a match-high 19 digs from senior Caitlyn Anderson. Amy Fackrell added seven kills and Jocilyn Taylor posted 38 assists and seven digs.
Southern Utah was led by Hooper, Utah native Analaine Pelaez who recorded 29 kills and nine digs. She had 68 attacks for the match.
The Wildcats will now return their focus to Big Sky Conference play. The 'Cats have three conference matches remaining beginning Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Idaho State. WSU must win all three matches to have any shot at qualifying for the conference tournament.
