OREM, Utah -- One day after earning the first win of the season, the Weber State softball team dropped the final pair of a four-game series with Utah Valley, falling 14-1 and 10-2 at UVU Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats fell behind 1-0 as the Wolverines scored in the top of the second inning. WSU responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame. Ariel Whiteman singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a single by BreAnn Jones to tie the game at 1-1.
Utah Valley then broke the game open with a pair of runs in the third inning, seven in the fourth and four in the fifth.
In game two, Britinie Hardine got things going early for the 'Cats as she led off the game with her team-leading sixth home run of the season. The round-tripper was the third time this season that she has started the game with a leadoff home run.
Linnea Ketcher followed Hardine's homer with a single, but during the subsequent at-bat was called out for leaving first base early. The call was crucial as Heather Jackson then tripled down the right field line. Ariel Whiteman followed with a walk to give WSU runners on first and third with one out, but the Wolverines stranded the two runners with a popup and a strikeout.
The Wolverines then responded with back-to-back homers to lead off the top of the second inning and scored four more times in the top of the third to take a commanding 6-1 lead. UVU would add another run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Weber State would get its other run in the bottom of the sixth. Whiteman doubled to right center to start off the inning. Pinch runner Jessica Adler then was moved to third on a groundout and later scored on a single by Abby Bowcutt. Genasee Aman then singled, but once again the Wildcats left multiple runners on base.
With the pair of losses, the Wildcats fall to 1-31 overall and 1-3 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play. The Wolverines improved to 15-16 overall and 3-1 in the PCSC.
The Wildcats will open up the home conference schedule next weekend with a four-game series against Seattle. The two teams will play a doubleheader on both Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 17. Friday's games are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. starts, while Saturday's action will begin at Noon and 2:00 p.m.
