OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's softball team wrapped up the first season since dropping the program in 1983 with a win on Saturday afternoon with an 8-2 victory over Idaho State at Wildcat Field.
The two teams split the doubleheader, with the Bengals taking an 8-2 win of their own in the opener.
Aubri Chiquete supplied the big hit in a seven-run rally in the third inning of game two for the Wildcats with a three-run homer. Heather Jackson drove in a pair of runs for the Wildcats in the game, going 2 for 4.
The Bengals were hot early in game one, scoring at least two runs in each of the first three innings, while adding a solo run in the fourth for their eight runs. Meanwhile, the Wildcats had their leadoff batter reach base in each of the first four innings, but managed to score only in the fourth.
BreAnn Jones supplied the offensive production for the Wildcats in the opener, driving home both runs on a bases-loaded, one-out double to the left center field gap.
In game two, the Wildcats kept the game scoreless until they broke it open with their largest-scoring inning of the season. London Clarke and Linnea Ketcher started the rally for WSU with back-to-back singles with one out. After Abby Bowcutt reached on an error to load the bases, Jackson doubled home a pair for the first runs of the game. Britinie Hardine followed with an RBI single to left, setting up Chiquete's three-run blast. BreAnn Jones was singled home by Brandi Christopher for the final run of the seven-run rally.
WSU starting pitcher Angela DeVries loaded the bases on walks in the bottom of the third, as the Bengals threatened to put together a rally of their own. But Hardine came on in relief to retire the side on a strikeout and a groundout, allowing only a single inherited runner to score.
DeVries came back on in the fourth and pitched another two and two-thirds innings to qualify for the win. Hardine came back on in relief in the sixth and recorded the final four outs to preserve the win. With the win, DeVries improved to 1-9 on the season.
Weber State added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Morgan Gray drove home Jackson with a pinch-hit single.
The doubleheader was both Fan Appreciation Day and the Swing For Life day at Wildcat Field. The team wore pink jerseys during the game to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. Pink T-shirts were given away to the 198 fans in attendance, and the Swing For Life Foundation was on hand with merchandise and giveaways to raise donations for cancer research.
The Wildcats finish the season 2-48 and 2-18 in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, while ISU moved to 14-39 and 6-14 in conference play with the split.
