Women's Soccer roughed up by BYU

8/28/2010 8:09:00 AM | Women's Soccer

PROVO -- A solid battle for a half, the Weber State University women's soccer team couldn't keep up with the nationally-ranked BYU Cougars in the second half and fell to 0-2-0 on the season.

Trailing just 1-0 at halftime, the Wildcats struggled to contain the Cougars offense in the second half and fell 5-1 on a rain-soaked Friday night at South Field.

BYU (3-0-0) scored in the 29th minute during a scramble in front of the net, with Lindsi Lisonbee punching in the goal. Weber State created some solid opportunities during the dying minutes of the first half, but was unable to create those attacks into scoring chaces.

The second half quickly became a nightmare for the Wildcats, with the Cougars' Jennie Marshall scoring in the 50th and 61st minutes to make it 3-0, followed by Kassidy Shumway's 69th minute tally and Auna Doria's 75th minute strike to make it 5-0.

Weber State refused the be shutout, however, as freshman midfielder Alyssa Amano snagged a sliding pass from Ari Wood and moved through traffic to blast it home from 20 yards out in the 83rd mintue.

BYU outshot the Wildcats 23-2 on the night, with redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ryann Waldman tallying 12 saves in the match.

The match featured a lightning delay of more than an hour, eventually kicking off at 8:15 p.m. It's the second time in the Weber State's past three trips to South Field that a match has been delayed due to a lightning storm. In August of 2006, similar storm delayed the start of a match between the two schools by nearly two hours.

Weber State will return to action on Friday when the Wildcats host St. Mary's College at 3 p.m. at Wildcat Soccer Field.
