Wildcats Fall Short against Hornets

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team battled Big Sky favorite Sacramento State on Friday morning at the Ogden Athletic Club, but the Wildcats' solid effort came up short as the Hornets pulled out a few key matches to take a 5-2 win.
"The guys played really hard today," said WSU head coach Jared Burnham. "We didn't play the big points very well, and that cost us. We have a young group and they will learn how to play those points smarter as the season goes on. I can't complain one bit about the effort that we got from each of our players, though."
The Wildcats duo of Simon Unger and Oliver Good took the No. 1 doubles match after fighting to a 9-7 win over Javier Millan and Alexandr Malko, but the Hornets took the No. 2 match 8-3 and earned the point with an 8-5 win at No. 3.
In singles play, the Wildcats took points with wins at both the No. 3 and 4 matches. Landon Barlow defeated Marko Starcevic 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, while Caio Poitena downed Malko 4-6, 7-6, 10-7 in the No. 4 match.
Sac State's Kiryl Harbatsiuk, the 17th-ranked player in the nation, pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 three-set win over Unger in the No. 1 singles match, while Josh Lorentzen came out victorious with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 decision against Good at No. 6. The pair of tight matches could have swung the match in Weber State's favor, but both went the way of the Hornets to produce the 5-2 result.
Weber State will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 8, as they take on Idaho State at Noon at the Ogden Athletic Club.
