OGDEN – The light, steady rain that drizzled over Wildcat Softball Field just prior to the first pitch was an omen of things to come.
Despite a solid hitting afternoon from centerfielder Erika James, the Weber State University softball team was swept in its home opener against New Mexico State, falling 10-1 and 6-3 to the Aggies on Wednesday afternoon.
James, a junior college transfer making her official home debut, was 4-of-6 at the plate across the two games, also scoring a run in the second game. Senior second baseman Heather Jackson was 3-of-5 with an RBI and a double.
Brandi Christopher and Ashley Huddleston each had home runs for the Purple and White, which was playing its first game of the season at home after opening the year with 19 road or neutral field contests.
In the opening game, Weber State notched six hits, with James and Jackson gaining two each. Offensively, New Mexico State did all of its damage in the second, fourth and fifth inning as it captured the five-inning victory.
The Aggies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and ultimately led 6-0 before Weber State scored a run in each of the final three innings.
Two of those runs were long balls, with Christopher going deep in the fifth and Huddleston in the seventh. Lyndsey Minnich brought in the sixth inning run with an RBI single.
In all six Wildcats managed hits in the closing game.
Weber State will remain at home this week, facing North Dakota at 4 p.m. on Friday, following by a double-header with the Sioux on Saturday beginning at Noon. The Saturday game is alumni day.
