Weber State Hosts Idaho State Tuesday

Wildcats Sweep Bears on the Road

3/5/2011 4:30:00 AM | Men's Tennis

GREELEY, Colo. -- The Weber State men's tennis team pushed its winning streak to four matches on Friday after cruising to a 7-0 win over Northern Colorado at the Work Out West athletic club.

"Our guys really came focused and ready to play today," said WSU head coach Jared Burnham. "All of the (Big Sky) conference matches are important with only four teams making the tournament now, and anytime you can get one on the road is a big win."

The Wildcats swept all nine matches on the day, starting with a clean sweep of the doubles competition. Simon Unger and Oliver Good defeated Ryan Lane and Robbie Edwards 8-3 at No. 1, and Landon Barlow and Dave Hintze defeated Jeff Carlson and Michael Moya 8-3 at No. 2 to give the Wildcats the opening point. Caio Poitena and Peter Ramstromer Pello finished off the sweep with an 8-5 win in the No. 3 match.

In singles, the Wildcats kept their foot on the gas, sweeping the six singles matches, with four coming in straight sets. Barlow, the reigning Big Sky Player of the Week, easily handled Alex Moncada to give WSU the first singles point and a 2-0 overall lead, with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 2 position.

Unger and Hintze followed closely behind to give the Wildcats the four points they needed to clinch the match. Unger took down the Bears' No. 1 player with a 6-4, 6-0 decision, while Hintze defeated Travis Day 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.

Good and Ramstromer Pello gave the Wildcats their fourth and fifth straight-sets win of the day, with Good downing Andre Lepine 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 6 match, and Ramstromer Pello taking out Moya by a tight 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) score.

Weber State then finished off the sweep of the Bears with a three-set win at No. 3. Poitena dropped his first set (6-2) for the third-straight outing, but, like the previous two times, he rallied for the win. The freshman won a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5) in the second set to stay alive, and then finished off Carlson with a 6-2 score in the deciding set.

WSU improved to 4-7 on the season and, more importantly, moved to 3-1 in conference play at the midpoint of the Big Sky schedule. Northern Colorado dropped to 2-8 overall and lost its fourth league match in-as-many tries.

Weber State will remain in Colorado for a pair of non-conference matches. The Wildcats will face Lamar on Saturday and Air Force on Sunday. Both matches will be played at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
