Wildcats split doubleheader with Thunderbirds

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Wildcats' bats cooled down a little, but that didn't stop the Weber State softball team from earning a split with in-state rival Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon.
Weber State earned a 6-3 victory in the day's first contest, and then took a 13-4, five-inning defeat in the second matchup at Kathryn Berg Field.
Senior Lyndsey Minnich had five RBIs on two hits across the two games, including three on a seventh-inning home run in the first game. Freshman Janel Cunningham had a solo home run and two hits in the first contest. In all, the Wildcats finished the day with 16 hits and just one error.
In the first game, the Wildcats and Thunderbirds traded runs until the seventh inning, with the contest knotted up at 2-2. Minnich's three-run shot made it 5-2 and then Cunningham's blast over the center field fence made it 6-2. SUU loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with no outs, and closed it to 6-3 on a short single to left field, but the Wildcats tagged the runner out at third base and then closed the game out after a foul out and a ground out to second.
Cunningham and Ashley Huddleston each recorded multiple hits in the game, and senior Sarah Clark picked up her third win of the season.
In the second game, Southern Utah exploded early and stormed out to a 12-0 lead after two innings.
Weber State scored twice in the third and twice in the fifth, but was unable to put a dent in the Thunderbirds' lead.
Seniors Erika Dixon and Symbree Minniear each recorded two hits in game, with Dixon and Brooke Silva each recording a double.
Weber State (4-8) and Southern Utah (5-7) will meet in the series' rubber match at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
