PORTLAND, Ore. - The Wildcats threw everything they had at the Vikings, but came up just short in a pair of two-run defeats on Saturday afternoon.
Senior right hander Sarah Clark held Portland State to just five hits in two complete games, but the Weber State University softball team couldn't get the timely hits it needed to overtake the Vikings, falling by identical 2-0 scores at Erv Lind Stadium.
Clark struck out eight, allowing four runs - three earned - in 12 innings on the mound.
Offensively, the Wildcats managed seven hits, including two by senior Erika James-Dixon, against Vikings' ace Anna Bertrand, and left 12 runners on base during the two games.
With the two wins, Portland State clinched the Pacific Coast Softball Conference's Mountain Division and earned a berth in the PCSC championship series that will take place on May 11-12 at the site of the Coastal Division champion.
The Wildcats' best chance in the first game came during the fifth inning when the Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs, but Bertrand struck out freshman catcher Janel Cunningham on a full-count.
Aggressive base-running by Dixon early in the second game put her on third with just one out, but the Vikings got a strikeout and a pop up to end the inning.
The Wildcats had the tying run at the plate in both the sixth and seven innings, but couldn't get the final hits needed to complete a comeback.
Weber State (10-8 PCSC, 21-30 overall) and Portland State (13-5, 23-23) will meet twice more today to wrap up the series. Today's contests will be the final ones in a Purple and White uniform for seniors Sarah Clark, Lyndsey Minnich, Kami Johnson-Holley, Erika James-Dixon and Symbree Minniear.
First pitch at Erv Lind Stadium is set for 11 a.m.
