OGDEN, Utah - The Wildcats found their way back to the winning side of the ledger.
Freshman central defender Brecken Holbrook smashed home an 18-yard shot in the 52nd minute, lifting the Weber State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over in-state rival Southern Utah on Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
"We created a lot of opportunities and finally put one of them away," Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. "We played pretty well in both games this weekend. The results are definitely important, especially right now in conference, but I feel good with the way we're playing out on the field."
Holbrook's shot came off a free kick from freshman central midfielder Chansi Crompton just outside the box on the right angle, with Crompton swinging the ball to Holbrook who centered it and hit a blistering power shot into the back of the net.
It was one of three shots on the afternoon for Holbrook, who also helped anchor a defensive effort that allowed the Thunderbirds just seven shots and only three on goal.
Crompton's assist was her team-best fifth of the season, and ties her with former Wildcat greats Natalie Hensley and Hayley McCoy as the most in a season by a freshman player.
Weber State (2-2-0 Big Sky, 4-9-0 overall) finished 24 shots for the second consecutive match, tying a season high it set during Friday's 1-0 loss to Northern Arizona.
Freshman forward Mackenzie Harrison finished with a team-high four attempts, while Crompton had three attempts in addition to her assist.
Junior forward Felicia Sortor, sophomore midfielder Ryley Hansen, sophomore midfielder Abbey Kennedy and junior forward Sarah Mager each recorded multiple shots, and four other Wildcats also recorded an attempt.
Weber State outshot Southern Utah 12-4 during the opening 45 minutes and 12-3 during the second frame.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday against rival Idaho State. Kickoff for that match is set for Noon at Wildcat Soccer Field and will wrap up a three-match homestand for Weber State.
