Wildcat softball drops two at Red Desert Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Weber State University softball team took a step forward offensively on Saturday afternoon, but made a few costly mistake that denied the Wildcats a chance for their first win of the year.
Weber State fell 13-7 in Nevada in a back-and-forth game, before dropping a tough 10-2 setback to Arkansas in the second game of the day at St. George's Canyons Complex.
Freshman third baseman Alyson Kulp let the Weber State (0-4) offensively for the second straight day, going 3-for-7 at the plate with three runs scored during the two games. Junior catcher Desiree Mejia was 2-for-5 with a two-run double to deep right field in the game against the Wolf Pack. Junior shortstop Brooke Silva was 2-for-6, while sophomore Janel Cunningham was 2-for-6 with two runs scored.
In the first game, Weber State raced out to a 3-0 in the first inning, after Kulp and Cunningham each had singles and the Wolf Pack committed two errors that aided the Wildcats' cause.
Nevada came back in the second and third to take a 5-3 lead, but Cunningham hit a solo shot to make it 5-4 after three.
After holding their ground over the next two innings, the Wildcats regained the lead in the fifth inning as Krystin Kubo and Brooke Ford each singled to bring up Mejia, who blasted a ball down the right field line to bring in Kubo and Ford, giving Weber State a 6-5 lead.
Senior center fielder London Clarke hit a single to deep center field, which brought home freshman Dusti Blair - who was pinch running for Mejia - to make is 7-5.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats a costly error in the sixth inning allowed a base-runner that ultimately started a four-run inning for Nevada and the Wolf Pack added four more in the seventh to claim the win.
The Wildcats claimed a 1-0 lead in their second game against Arkansas as Kulp singled to lead off the game, and then Silva hit an RBI single to bring her home.
The Razorbacks went ahead 2-1 on a home run, but Kulp and Silva singled again, with Kulp coming across the plate to make it 2-2.
Arkansas hit two home runs, the second of which was a three RBI shot, that make it 7-2 after the second inning and then closed the game out in five with another trio of runs to end the game on run-rule.
Weber State will wrap up the Red Desert Classic at 11 a.m. on Sunday against Seattle.
