Wildcats fall to Seattle in Red Desert finale

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Weber State University softball team made strong strides during its opening weekend, but the Wildcats also showed some roughness around the edges that need to be ironed out.
Several of those rough edges showed through during their final contest of the Red Desert Classic on Sunday afternoon, a 5-0 setback to former Pacific Coast Softball Conference rival Seattle University at St. George's Canyons Complex.
"We saw some good things from our players this weekend; we had some stretches where we put things together, but we also made some key mistakes at critical times during each game," Weber State coach Tina Johnson said. "Our focus will be making adjustments quicker and becoming a more consistent team."
Senior center fielder London Clarke was one of four Wildcats who earned hits against the Redhawks, as she hammered out a double, as did freshman left field Rudi Barrios.
Freshman Jazmine Thompson got a single as a pinch-hitter, while junior right-hander/first baseman Jasmine Ioane also got a hit.
"A lot of the mistakes that we made came at key times, which magnified their importance," Johnson said. "We had a lot of players that got their first college playing experience this weekend and now they know how important it is to focus on every play and every at-bat."
After Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Weber State responded by loading the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but came up one play short in moving the runners across the plate.
The Redhawks made it 2-0 in the third, and then doubled up the lead in the fourth to make it 4-0, before bringing in a solo run in sixth to round out the scoring.
"We don't feel discouraged about the games this weekend; we're disappointed that we weren't consistent enough to get that first win," Johnson said. "It's the first weekend of a very long season; the most important thing is to learn from these games and move on to our next game."
Weber State will be back in action on Feb. 22 against Boise State in the opening game of the UC Riverside Invitational.
