LONG BEACH, Calif. - After getting rained out on Friday, the Weber State University softball team snagged a split during action at the Long Beach State Invitational on Saturday.

The Wildcats fell 3-0 to North Dakota State during their first game of the day at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif., but turned things around in the second game as they knocked off UNLV 7-3 at 49er Softball Complex to earn the split.

Junior third baseman Desiree Mejia went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs against the Rebels, while five other Wildcats earned hits as Weber State picked up its second win of the season.

Freshman first baseman Krystin Kubo had three hits between the two games, going 2-for-3 against North Dakota State and then 1-for-3 with a run scored against UNLV.

Freshman Jazmine Thompson had a hit in each game, scoring a run against the Rebels, while sophomore designated player Stephanie Mathias was 1-for-1 with two RBIs.

The Bison jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and then added a third run in the sixth, while holding the Wildcats to just four hits in the game.

After falling behind 2-0 against UNLV in the top of the fourth, the Weber State offense exploded in the bottom half of the inning.

Thompson singled to lead off the inning, advancing to second on a wild pitch, and sophomore Janel Cunningham walked and then both runners stole a base with one out.

Mejia singled up the left side to score Thompson, bringing up Mathias, who brought in freshman Dusti Blair - who pinch ran for Cunningham - to tie up the game at 2-2 on a fielder's choice bunt.

With runners on first and second, freshman left fielder Rudi Barrios hit a single to load the bases, and then freshman second baseman Brooke Ford hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Mejia, giving Weber State a 3-2 lead.

Senior center fielder London Clarke came up, singling up the middle to score Mathias and then Barrios scored on the throw before Clarke was tagged out at second base, giving the Wildcats a 5-2 lead.

After holding the Rebels in the fifth, Mejia hit a two-out single that scored junior shortstop Brooke Silva, and then Mathias hit a single to right field that scored Kubo and put the Wildcats ahead 7-2.

The Rebels pulled one run back in the top of the seventh, but the Wildcats closed down the rally as junior right-hander Kylee Colvin picked up her second win of the year on the mound.

Weber State will wrap up the Long Beach State Invitational against UC Santa Barbara today at 10 a.m. The game was a late addition for the Wildcats after their Friday game vs. No. 19 Virginia Tech was rained out.
