LAKEWOOD, Calif. - The Weber State University softball team dropped a hard-fought battle with UC Santa Barbara in its final game of the Long Beach State Invitational on Sunday morning.
The Gauchos scored broke a 1-1 tie with runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, and then held on for a 4-2 victory over the Wildcats at Mayfair Park.
Freshman first baseman Krystin Kubo, freshman second baseman Brooke Ford and sophomore catch Janel Cunningham each had singles for the Wildcats.
With Weber State trailing 1-0, Ford singled to get on base and then scored on a sacrifice by junior shortstop Brooke Silva to even the game up at 1-1.
Cunningham singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, with freshman Dusti Blair pinch-running and eventually scoring on a sacrifice to right field by freshman designated player Rudi Barrios.
With one runner on and two outs, the Wildcats brought the potential tying run to the plate, but Ford grounded out to the shortstop to end the game.
Weber State (2-18) will make its 2013 home debut on Wednesday when the Wildcats host in-state rival Utah State at Wildcat Softball Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., with a second game to follow at approximately 3 p.m.
