OGDEN, Utah - The Wildcats' homecoming ended in a stinging disappointment.

Taking on in-state rival Utah State on Wednesday afternoon, the Weber State University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Aggies at Wildcat Softball Field, falling 2-1 and 11-3 in their first home games of the season.

Junior shortstop Brooke Silva, junior third baseman Desiree Mejia and freshman left fielder Rudi Barrios each had two hits during the afternoon, but the Wildcats weren't able to sustain a consistent presence at the plate as they finished with just seven total hits in the two games.

In the opening game, Utah State scored twice in the top of the third and then held off the Wildcats, who left four runners on base in the final two innings - including a potential tying run on third base in the sixth.

Weber State scored its lone run of the game on a throwing error by Utah State that allowed freshman pinch runner Jessica Chaulkin to score from third base.

In the second game, the Aggies came out swinging and scored four runs on four hits in the top of the first to take an 4-0 lead. Utah State led 8-0 in the third before the Wildcats pulled one back on Barrios' sacrifice fly to center field that allowed redshirt freshman Kyralyn Kawasaki to score.

The Aggies went back ahead by eight runs in the fifth inning, taking a 9-1 lead, and had the Wildcats down to their final out before Silva hit a double that scored Chaulkin from second base, keeping Weber State alive.

The Wildcats made it 9-3 in the sixth after Alyson Kulp's sacrifice fly to left field scored freshman pinch runner Brooke Ford, but that's as close as WSU would get as the Aggies scored twice more in the top of the seventh and then quickly got the final three outs to end the game.

Weber State will return to action on March 22 when the Wildcats host North Dakota in their Big Sky Conference opener at Wildcat Softball Field, kicking off the 18-game league season.
