OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State University softball team suffered through an error-filled afternoon on Saturday, dropping its series finale against the University of North Dakota 11-4 in Big Sky Conference action at Wildcat Softball Field.
The Wildcats (2-1 Big Sky, 4-21 overall) pounded out a series high 10 hits, but committed five errors and stranded nine base runners in the loss.
Junior shortstop Brooke Silva, senior outfielder London Clarke and freshman second baseman Brooke Ford each recorded two hits, while freshman third baseman Alyson Kulp, junior catcher Desiree Mejia, freshman left fielder Rudi Barrios and freshman right fielder Jazmine Thompson each had hits. Kulp and Barrios each recorded doubles, while Silva had two RBIs.
North Dakota took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, with Weber State cutting it to 2-1 in the third inning. UND scored twice in the fourth to make it 4-1, but the Wildcats fought back to make it 4-3 at the end of the inning.
Disaster struck for WSU in the top of the fifth, however, as the combination of errors and a few timely hits saw North Dakota push five runners across the plate to make it 9-3 and all but put the game out of reach.
UND added two more in the sixth, threatening to end the game on run rule, but Kulp hit an RBI double that scored Clarke to keep the Wildcats alive for the final inning.
Weber State will be back in action on Tuesday, stepping out of Big Sky action, to take on the University of Great Falls in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch against the Argos is set for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Softball Field.
The Wildcats, who are currently tied for the Big Sky Conference lead with Sacramento State and Portland State, will host the Vikings on Friday and Saturday.
